01 Background

Bringing Bikini Bottom into Fortnite

In partnership with Epic Games and Paramount, Devhouse designed and delivered a mobile-first SpongeBob experience built to showcase Fortnite's performance on mobile devices. The project brought a globally recognized world into a social, system-driven format designed for quick and approachable play. It also created an opportunity to demonstrate that a richly branded Fortnite experience could remain expressive, responsive, and inviting on mobile hardware.

02 Challenge

Building mobile-first Fortnite gameplay systems

Design, build, and release a mobile-first SpongeBob experience within Fortnite that showcases high-performance gameplay, intuitive UX, and strong IP integration, all within a rapid production timeline. Players needed to understand the experience quickly while still discovering enough character behavior, progression, and interaction to keep each session engaging. The final result also had to feel genuinely rooted in SpongeBob rather than simply decorated with familiar characters.

03 Constraints

Balancing IP authenticity with mobile performance

The experience had to meet an accelerated schedule, perform smoothly on mobile hardware, remain intuitive in short play sessions, and represent the SpongeBob IP authentically. Every visual, system, and interaction competed for a limited performance and production budget, so the team had to be deliberate about where complexity created the most value. Paramount's brand standards and Fortnite's platform requirements also needed to be addressed throughout development rather than treated as final review gates.

04 Technical approach

Turning brand constraints into player-driven fun

The team treated brand guidelines and platform constraints as creative direction, focusing development around recognizable character moments and player-driven fun. Layered guest behaviors, progression loops, and passive states were presented through a clear, approachable interface. Engineering, art, and design iterated together to prioritize the interactions players would notice most, while regular mobile testing kept performance and usability visible throughout production.

05 Timeline

Shipping a polished branded experience in months

The team built and shipped the fully realized experience in just a few months. That compressed schedule required early alignment on the core loop, fast prototyping, and frequent reviews with Epic Games and Paramount. By resolving brand, platform, and gameplay questions continuously, the team preserved enough time for mobile optimization, usability improvements, and the final layer of character-driven polish.

06 Outcome

Building an authentic mobile-first world

01

Authentic world building

Collaborated closely with Paramount throughout production to authentically represent SpongeBob's characters, humor, and world while translating them into an interactive Fortnite experience.

02

Layered Gameplay Systems

Developed layered gameplay systems, including guest behaviors, progression loops, and passive states, and presented their depth through an intuitive interface that remains easy to understand.

03

Mobile-First

Designed specifically for mobile play, balancing smooth performance and clear UX with short, engaging session loops that still give players meaningful goals and interactions.

07 Lessons Learned

Designing authenticity and performance together

Treating brand and platform constraints as creative inputs helped the team protect authenticity, performance, and polish under an accelerated schedule. Bringing stakeholders into the iteration loop early made approvals more useful and reduced the risk of late creative rework. The project also reinforced that mobile-first design is most successful when performance, interface clarity, and session pacing influence the experience from its earliest prototypes.

Partner perspective

What our partners say

The Devhouse Team brought Bikini Bottom to life in SpongeBob Party, from the design, to the music, and the events; it all came together into an experience that made you feel like you were actually inside the SpongeBob world. Watching them build the tech, craft the graphics and audio, and problem solve through every challenge was incredible. They were a fantastic partner, and I can't wait to see what they build next.
