Our Tribe Above All
Blending the addictive gameplay of the survivor-like genre with evocative storytelling, hand-drawn animation, and the camaraderie of online multiplayer, Our Tribe Above All aims to craft a lasting impression with players that’s as emotionally resonant as it is thrilling and enjoyable to play.
01 Background
Blending survivor-like action with emotional storytelling

Our Tribe Above All is a Devhouse original that combines survivor-like gameplay, evocative storytelling, hand-drawn animation, and online multiplayer. The project explores how the momentum and replayability of the genre can coexist with characters, relationships, and a world that carry emotional weight. Because the game is being developed internally, every discipline has the opportunity to shape both the immediate play experience and the larger creative identity from the beginning.
02 Challenge
Making cooperative combat emotionally resonant
Create an experience that is mechanically exciting and replayable while retaining emotional resonance and a distinctive hand-drawn identity. Combat and progression need to remain clear under pressure, while cooperative play should create genuine moments of reliance between players. The challenge is to make those systems reinforce the story and tone rather than feeling disconnected from them.
03 Constraints
Unifying gameplay, narrative, animation, and multiplayer
Gameplay, narrative, animation, and online multiplayer all need to reinforce one cohesive player experience. Decisions in any one discipline can affect readability, network behavior, production scope, and the emotional pacing of the game. The team must continually balance ambition with a focused set of systems that can be tested, refined, and delivered to a consistent quality bar.
04 Technical approach
Prototyping combat and hand-drawn presentation together
Engineering, art, and design are being developed together so combat systems, cooperative play, storytelling, and animation can evolve as a unified whole. Prototypes are used to test the relationship between moment-to-moment action and the hand-drawn presentation before ideas become expensive to change. This cross-disciplinary process keeps technical feasibility, player feedback, and creative intent in the same conversation throughout development.
05 Timeline
Validating the creative thesis through playtesting
Our Tribe Above All is currently in development, progressing through iterative design, prototyping, production, and playtesting. The team is using each phase to validate core combat, cooperative behavior, progression, and presentation before expanding the surrounding experience. This measured approach gives the project room to evolve while protecting the creative principles at its center.
06 Outcome
Establishing one unified creative direction
A unified creative direction
Core systems and the hand-drawn presentation are being designed together to support cooperative play, mechanical replayability, and emotional storytelling as parts of one unified experience.
07 Lessons Learned
Using shared prototypes to connect every discipline
Developing an original game makes the relationship between disciplines especially visible: a change to combat can reshape animation, networking, narrative pacing, and production scope at once. Early shared prototypes help the team evaluate those effects before committing too deeply to a direction. The process continues to reinforce the value of protecting a clear creative thesis while remaining flexible about how the team achieves it.
